3D vs 2D: Different Perspectives or Upholding Tradition
Do you think that 3D is the evolution of the 2D game? Or perhaps, do you believe that 2D games have, and always will have, their place in gaming?
What are your opinions? ![]() Eric Christian Wichita, Kansas United States of America |

Re: 3D vs 2D: Different Perspectives or Upholding Tradition
I think 2D games will always have a place for those retro gamers who miss the old days (like myself)
3D games are also much harder to develope by small groups of indie developers (Drawing 2D sprites is much easier and faster than modelling something 3D. It also doesn't require as much experience.) Big game companies are obvioudly leaving 2D gaming behind though.. or mostly. |

Re: 3D vs 2D: Different Perspectives or Upholding Tradition
Yeah, definitely good points.
However, as technology increases, the ease of making a 3D model decreases. For instance, making a complex 3D model 6 years ago was much harder than it is now. With that, I think we'll see an upsurge in the amount of 3D games coming out from Indie developers over the next 10 years. ![]() Eric Christian Wichita, Kansas United States of America |

Re: 3D vs 2D: Different Perspectives or Upholding Tradition
Very true
Have you seen what google is working on? Being capable of modelling a 3D object within a video clip.. forgot the name of it but it was pretty recent |

Hmm... Interesting.
The only thing I knew about that Google was working on was that O3D project. ![]() Eric Christian Wichita, Kansas United States of America |

Re: 3D vs 2D: Different Perspectives or Upholding Tradition
Here it is, It's called 'VideoTrace'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEM-XAeY4K0 (Hour presentation of the overview of it lol) It basically will allow you to model 3D objects based on objects which were recorded in video footage. The shape of the object you are drawing within the timeline will be kept based on the camera angle, so you can model around a whole car and perspective will be taken into account. Though it's just low poly within their program, you can then import it to something like 3DS Max and add subdivision to it. (GoogleTechTalks develope a lot of stuff behind the scenes of Google) Not sure when/if it'll be released (or if it has already been released xd), it's been almost 2 years since that presentation ! |
